May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Meridian Health Services is rooted in mental health care. Founded as Comprehensive Mental Health Services of Northeast Indiana in 1976, we started with outpatient services in Muncie, Portland and New Castle and offered inpatient care at the then Ball Memorial Hospital. Dr. Suzanne Gresham became executive director in 1978. In 1992, we created a division of mental health and renewed our emphasis shifting from institutional care to community-based care. Now in our fifth decade, Meridian Health Services continues to be a leader in this field.

Today, mental health care is part of a continuum of care at Meridian. The best medicine gives patients what they need, when they need it and where they need it. We call it whole person health – focusing on the body, mind and spirit. We believe our work to elevate and call attention to the crisis of mental health is helping to address gaps in care. Meridian started with an emphasis on mental health and this is a good month to remember that.
